GARDNER SETS BULLS RECORD FOR SAVES
RHP Lee Gardner pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save in a 5-2 victory for the Durham Bulls over the Richmond Braves on Monday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Gardner's save, his second of the season, is the 34th of his Bulls' career, breaking the previous record of 33 held by Maximo Del Rosario, who pitched for the Bulls between in parts of 1985-1989.
The Bulls broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the third inning. Jason Smith highlighted the inning with a two-run single that plated Jared Sandberg and Chris Truby. Truby added a solo home run in the fourth inning to finish out the Bulls scoring.
LHP Matt Perisho (2-0) picked up his second relief win of the season with two and 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. RHP Dewon Brazelton lasted 4 and 2/3 innings in his first start of the season, allowing two runs (earned) and four hits while striking out four and walking two.
Johnny Estrada knocked in Wilson Betemit and Mike Hessman with a double in the fourth inning to account for all of the Braves runs. LHP Andy Pratt (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs (two earned) and four hits in three and 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out six.
